A self-described "aging rocker" asked me to lighten his load. He loves this guitar but found its 9 lb. weight a bit taxing...   Closeup      Warning !

I routed out the backside opposite the control cavity in a mirror-image shape to the original cavity, to make it symmetrical. As a result of this guitar weight-loss program, it ended up a half-pound lighter.      Warning !

If you have a "vintage" or "collectible" instrument, such an operation is obviously not recommended.

This guitar was a good candidate since it was no longer "vintage" ( the original Tune-o-matic bridge had been replaced by a Kahler tremolo; the tuners and pickups had been swapped also ). Just as importantly, the owner knew this change would reduce the resale value, but wanted to proceed for the sake of his back.

Another consideration for such a rout is that it very well might affect the tone of the instrument. In this case, the tone seems to be unaffected.
